Company of Geography
The Société of geography is a Learned society French. One specifies Société of geography of Paris when one wants to correctly differentiate it from the other companies.
Its creation was considered as of 1785 by Jean-Nicolas Buache. A preparatory meeting took place the July 19th 1821 between scientists eager to form a company. The geographical Company was founded the December 15th 1821 with the Town hall of Paris. Two hundred twenty-seven personalities, of which the largest scientists of the time, such Champollion, Vat, Dumont d' Urville, von Humboldt, Laplace, Monge, took part in its creation. Famous members formed part of it. One can quote Jean Charcot, Anatole France, the marshal Lyautey, Albert of Monaco, Elisee Reclus or Jules Verne. Recognized public utility since 1827, it is the oldest company of Géographie in the world. It is for this reason that its president speaks in first in the international meetings of geographical companies.
It crowned the largest explorers and French and foreign scientists. She sponsors geographical work, whose forwardings, and contributes to the radiation of the French geography.

Its inheritance of works, reviews, Chart S, atlas, spheres, Photography S, is since 1942 managed by the National library of France.It is composed of:
- 90 000 works and 25 000 booklets,
- 2 000 titles of periodicals (including 340 receipts in exchange of the Bulletin of the Company of geography) representative 300 000 booklets,
- 135 000 iconographic documents, of which 100 000 photographs on paper,
- 70 000 charts,
- 500 boxes, paperboards and parcel of files.
