In 1922, on June 24th became one bank holiday with the Quebec and it is, since 1977, the day of the national Festival of Quebec. In the Years 1830, the Low-Canadians of origin just as several immigrant communities established charitable and patriotic companies. Thus, on December 19th, 1834, the English of Low-Canada founded off the Saint George' S Society Montreal , and, on October 12th, 1835, the Saint George' S Society off Quebec . The French-speaking Canadians founded on June 24th, 1834 what was going to become the SSJB. The Irish low-Canadian founded off the Saint Patrick' S Society Montreal the same year. February 6th, 1835, the Écossais founded off the Saint Andrew' S Society Montreal . The same year, the German founded off the German Society Montreal .
Following the example other companies, the Company Saint-Jean-Baptist was established with an aim of stimulating the feeling of national solidarity of the Canadians and of promoting all progress of the incipient nation. During its history, the organization was invested in all the spheres of the collective life of French-speaking Canadian Bottoms. Later, people will say “French Canadian” and, finally, “Inhabitant of Quebec”. The company, inter alia, played a determining role in the creation of the École of the fine arts of Montreal, the École of the high commercial studies of Montreal, the Monument-National, and the National company of trust. In 1899, it creates the National bank of economy and contributes to the setting-up of the Chamber of commerce of Montreal. The company also created several organizations to help its mission, in particular the Fondation of the loan on trust (in 1944) and the Fondation J. - Donat-Langelier (in 1988).
Early in its history, the company adopts the maple sheet like emblem and is made even to the promoter of a national anthem Canadian-French, who will become the O Canada . Ironically, these symbols since then have summer taken again by English Canada like symbol of the unit of the Canadian federation. A bilingual version of the O Canada even became the national anthem of the Canada in 1980.
Many branches of the SSJB were created by the Canadian-French, mainly in Quebec, but also in the anglophone provinces of Canada and with the the United States.
In 2005, the Company Saint-Jean-Baptist of Montreal account 14 sections in the great area of Montreal. The companies are associated with the National movement of Québécois and the Inhabitants of Quebec (MNQ) which, on its side, federates 14 companies Saint-Jean-Baptist or national companies affiliated in the remainder of Quebec.
Controversies
The SSJB was shown with many times to tolerate or encourage the Racisme, the Ethnisme or even the Antisémitisme. These charges became extensive at the time of the Affaire Bouthillier and the Affaire Michaud. However, the leaders of the SSJB always denied with vehemence these charges. The politization of the Company is also a discussed aspect: its leaders are famous close relations of the National movement of the Inhabitants of Quebec. Thus, the company had given an opinion in favor of the sovereignty of Quebec at the time of the political debates and chief clerks on the future of the Inhabitants of Quebec. She also decided in favor of the Re-designation of the festival of Dollard in national Journée of the Patriots in 2001-2002, which raised the anger of certain english-speaking of the Canada.
In 2006, it was revealed in the written press that the Company was infested by skinheads néonazis. This event played in the race with the direction of the organization
Lately, there was a controversy in connection with the dechristianization of the SSJB: thus the leader Christian-Democrat Gilles Christmas broke with the SSJB by affirming that the Company had been infiltrated by the pagan nationalists and freemasonry.
