Communication series
In Telecommunications and Data-processing, the communication series is the action to send data bit by bit, sequentially, on a Channel of communication or a data-processing Bus. The contrary method is the parallel Communication, where several bits are sent simultaneously. The communications series are used for the communications with long distance, and the majority of the data-processing networks because the high cost of the cables and the processes of synchronization make impossible the use of parallel communications. The buses series of computers are nowadays the most widespread and advanced technologies for fast transfers of information.
Parallel series/
A data communication can be either series, or parallel. A parallel communication transmits several simultaneous data flows on multiple channels (Electric wire, track of Printed circuit, Fiberoptic, etc) while a communication series transmits one data flow on one channel (or medium of communication). One would tend to think of the first accesses which a connection series would be less powerful than a parallel connection, since it transmits less data on each signal of Horloge. However, in the majority of the cases, the frequency of clock of a connection series is much higher than that of a parallel connection, and at final the rate of transferred data is consequently higher. Indeed:
- not of problem of shift of clock between the various channels (for the asynchronous connections series)
- only one cable for a connection series, therefore a weaker obstruction which allow a better insulation of the disturbances external
- reduction of the risks of Diaphonie and interferences between several channels
Generally, a connection series remains the best solution because it is much cheaper.
Examples of architectures of communication series
- Morse code (Telegraphy)
- RS-232 (old, low costs, low speed)
- EIA-422 (point-to-point connection)
- EIA-485 (connection multipoint)
- Universal Serial Drunk (USB) (new, mean velocity, for the connection of peripheral)
- FireWire
- Fiber Chanel (raised speed, for the connection of storage systems of mass)
- InfiniBand (very high-speed, comparable with NCV)
- Serial Attached SCSI
- Serial ATA
- PCI Express
