By surface
Same communes, classified by decreasing surface (the Seine-Saint-Denis measures 236,19 km ² on the whole). The size Moyenne of the communes is 5,99 km ², while the median size is 5,22 km ², much lower than the intermediate size and median of common Frenchwomen (14,88 and 10,73 km ² respectively).

By population
Same communes, classified by decreasing population (the Seine-Saint-Denis counted 1.382.856 inhabitants in 1999 on the whole, for one population density average of 5 859,6 hab. /km ², much higher than the national average). The population Moyenne of the communes is 36.254 inhabitants, while the median population is 34.598 inhabitants there, still much higher than the average and median population of the common Frenchwomen (1 542 and 380 inhabitants respectively).

Town planning
According to the classification of INSEE, all the communes of the Seine-Saint-Denis were included in the urban surface of Paris in 1999 and all were urban poles.

The department counted in 2004 at least two inter-commune structures:-
CACM : the Community of agglomeration of Clichy-sous-Bois Montfermeil, created in 2001.
- CAPC: the Community of agglomeration Plaine Commune, created in 2000.
