Commoner

commoner|commoner

Time when the Noblesse was recognized in France, the commoners were all the people who were not noble.

A commoner was not necessarily poor, it could have an unspecified trade very well. Some were even much richer than certain noble.

A commoner could become a Noble while being anobli.

Formerly, it was of rigor for the monarchs and the heirs to the royal families to marry with the other royal ones, or at least of noble prominent. However, several members of the royalties of Europe marry from now on with commoners. The current queens Silvie of Sweden and Sonja of Norway were born commoners, just as the wives of the crown princes to Spain (Letizia), of the Denmark (Mary), of the Netherlands (Máxima) and of Norway (Puts-Marit).

Contemporary use

Although there exists still a nobility recognized in other countries, and in France by that of these other countries, the word commoner is not any more very used.
