Common Murene

The Murène commune ( Muraena helena L. ) is a species of the family of the Muraenidae.

Description

  • Origin : The Mediterranean, Atlantic
  • Biotope : Rock Funds, cracks, anfractuosities (- 5 to -80 m)
  • Description : Body anguilliforme, robust and slightly compressed laterally, especially in its posterior part. The head is short, massive, with profile curvature. The teeth are long and pointed. The pectoral and ventral fins are absent; the dorsal is prolonged without discontinuity by the fins and the tail. The skin, deprived of scales, is smooth and thick.
  • adult Size : Can exceed 1.30 m length.
  • Food : Poisson and octopuses. Night, it nourishes also corpse and waste. Its bite is not poisonous but is not less painful.
  • Behavior : Aggressive if it feels threatened. Isolated and territorial.
  • Reproduction : Because of their night manners, the reproduction of murenes is still badly known. It is known that the eggs produce transparent larvae and punts, the Leptocéphale S, which float with the liking of the currents at the same time as the plankton.
