Commodores

The Commodores is one of the American groups most representative of the music Soul in the years 1970 and 1980. Until its departure in 1983, Lionel Richie was the singer of the group.

The Commodores were formed at the University of Tuskegee (Alabama) in 1967 and signed their first contract with Motown in 1972, which will be worth to them to ensure the first part of the European round of the Jackson 5.

The group is especially known by its ballades like Easy and Three Times has Lady , even if the majority of its titles approach more the Funk and the Disco, like Brick House , Say Yeah , Fancy Dancer and Too Hot Your Trot .

After the departure of Lionel Richie in 1983, which was directed towards a career in solo, the members of the group test themselves with the song and recruit finally J.D. Nicholas in 1984 to replace their leader. Other members also left the group (McClary in 1982, LaPread in 1986 and Williams in 1989). By losing its original artists, the group lost its inspiration little by little, evolving to a more commercial music. Except the tube Nightshift (a homage to Marvin Gaye and the artists missing from Motown), which obtained a Grammy Award in 1986, Commodores never succeeded in finding the success of the period when Richie was the voice of the group.

In 1986, Commodores leave Motown for Polydor. They leave several albums whose majority are compilations of preceding songs. Today, Commodores are made of Walter Orange, William King and J.D. Nicholas. They re-recorded several their old tubes and published an album live .
