Commission of terminology and neology

In France, the commissions of Terminology and neology have the role since 1972, within each ministry, to make recommendations for the use of terms relative to a given sector. The organization and the activities of these commissions are subjected to the mode of the decree of the July 3rd 1996 relating to the enrichment of the French language.

The commissions of terminology and neology fix lists of terms of reference and propose French equivalents of foreign terms. These proposals are published in the Official journal in the form of ministerial decrees, but they constitute only simple recommendations for the population and of the companies. Their use is however obligatory in the contracts signed by a public Anybody, for which the law of August 4th, 1994 (Loi Toubon) envisages an obligatory use of French.

Organization of the commissions of terminology

At the top of these commissions is the general commission of terminology and neology , created in 1997 and attached to the Prime Minister. It developed a Vocabulaire data processing and Internet .

Among the Committees of terminology and neology, one can quote for example that of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, which developed a list transcriptions for the names of country and capitals of the world in the Arrêté of November 4th, 1993.

The French Academy takes part in the deliberations of the commissions of terminology and neology. The decrees which they write cannot be published without its at least tacit agreement. The General delegation with the French language and the languages of France ensures the secretariat of the general commission.
