Commercy

Commercy is a common French, located in the department of the Meuse and the area Lorraine. The inhabitants of Commercy are called the Commerciens .

Geography

Commercy is in the valley of the Meuse.

It is located halfway between Bar-le-Duc at the west, and Nancy in the east.

RN4 passes to Void, to 9 km in the south of Commercy.

The railway Paris - Strasbourg passed to Lérouville (where is the Gare sorting) then to Commercy. This line does not exist any more since the service entrance of LGV Is European.

History

The site where Commercy is located was occupied as of the old Paléolithique (coast of Bussy). There are few traces of the city before the 9th century: passage of Louis Débonnaire towards 830. The city knew various names whose principal ones were, Commarchia (which means " on walk " i.e. the border) and Commercium (during the the Middle Ages).

Jean of Saarbrucken granted the city, in 1324, its charter of stamping, long document whose the currency is extracted from Commercy: " Which measures, lasts ".

The cardinal of Retz accepted in heritage the seigniory of Commercy in 1640, of which it was damoiseau . It sold in 1679 its rights of suzerainty to Anne of Lorraine, princess of Lillebonne and with her husband the duke of Lillebonne; the princess transmitted them itself in 1708 to her brother, the prince de Vaudémont. To died of the prince, in 1723, the seigniory turned over to the duke Léopold Ier.

The duchess dowager Elisabeth-Charlotte, after the renunciation of her son François III, accepted the principality of Commercy like an half-exile. With its death on December 23rd 1744, new the " duc" , Stanislas, father-in-law of the king de France Louis XV, having already received the duchies of Lorraine and of Bar, very impatient, took possession of Commercy to embellish it and create extraordinary gardens there.

The city already had been besieged by the French troops of Louis XIV in 1652.

Economy

The economy is supported by the professionalisation of the 8 {{E}} regiment of artillery.

Administration

Commercy is the chief town of the one of the three Arrondissement S of the Meuse, and the chief town of a canton.

Famous characters

  • Henri Braconnot, chemist

  • the Cardinal of Retz settled in Commercy of 1660 with 1678, where he wrote his famous memories. It made bore through the Forêt the large alley called still " cardinal Trench ".
  • Dom Calmet remained a long time in Commercy. A place bears its name, close to the church, in the oldest district of the city.
  • Voltaire remained regularly with the castle which Stanislas opened to him; he wrote many parts there.
  • Birth of the realizer Maurice Bell the June 17th 1907.

Tourist monuments and places

The Château of Commercy was the residence of the duchess dowager of Lorraine and Bar, Elisabeth Charlotte of Orleans, then of Stanislas Leszczyński, deposed King of Poland but father-in-law of Louis XV.

The Prieuré of Breuil where Dom Calmet remained was recently magnificiently restored.

Twinning

(April 18th), for its circuit of Formula 1 celebrates.
