honourable the Felix-Gabriel Marchand (born the January 9th 1832 and deceased the September 25th 1900) was a Journaliste, author, notary and politician Québécois. He was Prime Minister for Quebec, under the banner of the Liberal party of Quebec, of the May 27th 1897 with the September 25th 1900, date on which he is deceased in the performance of his duties.
Biography
Born with Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in 1832, he is the son of Gabriel Marchand and Mary McNider, a woman of confession Anglican and Scottish ascent . Child, it attends the English schools and learns French at the 11 years age.
Perfectly bilingual, Marchand becomes Journaliste and writer. He will write in particular for the newspaper French Canada during several decades. He becomes notary and practical this profession during 45 years, without however forsaking journalism and the writing.
He is elected with the legislative Assemblée of Quebec at the time of the provincial general elections in 1867, and preserves his seat during 33 years until his death. In 1878, he is member of the government Jolly De Lotbinière as provincial secretary. In 1887, Honore Mercier names it with the presidency of the legislative Assemblée. He is chief of the opposition of 1892 to 1897, and then gains the elections of 1897 as a chief of the Liberal party of Quebec.
As a Prime Minister, Marchand tries to create a Minister of education in 1898. At the time, education was entirely with the hands of the clergy of the Roman Catholic church in the province. The bill is adopted by the legislative Parliament (the Lower House of the legislature of Quebec at the time) but east demolishes by the Legislative council (the Upper House). It is only in 1964 that a Minister of education is finally created in Quebec.
Felix-Gabriel Marchand is always posts some when he dies in 1900 with Quebec. He is buried with the Cimetière Our-Lady-with-Belmont in Quebec.
To date in its birthplace, the bridge Felix-Gabriel Marchand, built in his honor in 1958 belongs to the landscape of the town of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. This bridge allows the passage of the Autoroute 35 above the Rivière Richelieu.
Also let us note that this last has a commemorative plaque in its honor in the town of Quebec.
