Whereas the majority of the songs of the album The Wall were entirely written and composed by Roger Waters, the major part of the music of Comfortably Numb was written by David Gilmour in 1978, at the moment when it recorded its first album solo, David Gilmour , in the south of the France. At the time, Gilmour decided, rather than to employ it on its album, to propose its demonstration at the sessions of recording of The Wall with Pink Floyd. Roger Waters then wrote the words starting from this music and addition some agreements.

In a maintenance granted to the radio KLOS of Los Angeles in the neighborhood of 1980, in particular quoted by the magazine Rolling Stone , Roger Waters tells that the words were inspired to him by a lived experiment whereas it was reached of a Hépatite still not diagnosed, one evening in concert to Philadelphia when, before it enters in scene and to calm his pain, a doctor managed to him an injection of Sédatif. “I lived then the two longest hours of my existence”, tell it, “to try to make a concert whereas I could hardly raise an arm. ”

After the departure of Roger Toilets of Pink Floyd, Gilmour moreover somewhat adapted the piece to its approach more Grunge of the music. In particular the version testifies being reproduced on the album in '' live '' P·U·L·S·E , recorded in 1994 without Waters, in which the final solo of guitar lasts four minutes thirty. Analyzes words

The words of Comfortably Numb (title which one can translate by “Agreeably engourdi” into French) evoke this state of inertia of the hero: the verses, sung by Toilets, correspond to the words of the doctor who deals with him, while the refrain, sung by Gilmour, expresses the thoughts and the confused visions of Pink. Whereas some believe that the song refers to drugs, Roger Waters declares that it is not the case. The words speak about the feelings which he lived when it was child and that it was sick. David Gilmour says that the song is divided into two sections, the “black” section and the “white” section. The white section would be that of the refrains, sung by Gilmour, and the black section that of the verses, sung by Waters, and would be named greater solo of guitar of all times by the Webzine '' DigitalDreamDoor '' , right in front of Stairway to Heaven of Led Zeppelin.
