As of the Gallo-Roman time, Combourg occupied a strategic position and was a village with the intense artisanal activity. Until the year thousand, the city undergoes the attacks dévasteurs of the Viking S.The seigniory of Combourg was created by the archbishop of Fraud Ginguéné or Junkéné in favor of his/her younger brother Riwallon de Dol. The archbishop who wished to give to his church a laic guard while equipping his family, as was then the use, made build with 4 miles of Fraud the castle of Combourg which he entrusted to his brother with vast domains under his mobility, that is to say about fifteen parishes and twelve strongholds of knighthood. On the other hand it imposed to him and with its successors the obligation to defend the grounds and subjects of the church of Fraud and to order its ost. For this reason the lord de Combourg took in his Chartres the title to mean Sancti Samsonis ( color-bearer of Saint Samson ). The seigniory of Combourg remained in possession of the descendants of Riwallon until the death of Yseult de Dol in 1197. However the son whom it had had of his union with Harsculf de Soligné (death also in 1197) raised the name of his mother while becoming Jean III of Fraud.
The seigniory of Combourg was then transmitted by heritage to the families: from Châteaugiron known as of Malestroit of Rieux, Of Châtel, Montjean, Acigné and finally of Coëtquen the latter obtained that the seigniory is set up in County in 1575. The ultimate heiress of this family sold the county to the parents of Chateaubriant by contract of the May 3rd 1761.
