Column of Arcadius

The column of Arcadius is a triumphal column set up in 401 on the Forum of Arcadius to Constantinople to commemorate the triumph of this emperor on the party Goth of Gaïnas in 400. The decoration was completed only in 421, well after the death of Arcadius in 408, and the monument was then dedicated to the new emperor, Théodose II.

Strongly inspired by the Column of Théodose drawn up by this emperor on the Forum Tauri in the years 380, this monument continues the tradition of the triumphal columns of Rome the such column of Trajan and the Colonne of Marc-Aurèle.

The column was destroyed at the 16th century and there does not remain about it any more that the solid mass of masonry of the base as well as the base. The detail of its decoration however is preserved by a series of drawings carried out in 1575. It was made of Serpentine and the red base of Granite.
