Columbia Pictures is a Hollywood movie studio which was created in 1919 by Jack Cohn (1889-1956) and his/her brother Harry (1891-1958) under the name of CBC Film Corporation .
Among large films of the firm, one can quote Gilda ( Gilda , 1946), On the quays ( One the Waterfront , 1954), Lawrence of Arabia ( Lawrence off Arabia , 1962), Shampoo (1975), Rencontres of the third type ( Close Encounters off the Third Kind , 1977), Kramer against Kramer ( Kramer vs. Kramer , 1979) and the China syndrome ( The China Syndrome , 1979).
The logo of the company represents a Personnification of the United States, Columbia, carrying a torch (thus evoking the Statue of Freedom).
History
The company is renamed Columbia Pictures in 1924.
Produced Columbia of many films of Frank Capra and reveals the actress Rita Hayworth.
Columbia Pictures is repurchased in 1982 by The Coca-Cola Company then in 1989 by Sony for 5 billion dollars.
In 1987, the company creates the studio TriStar Pictures.
Columbia Pictures forms part since 2005 of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
