Columbia Broadcasting System (or CBS ) is an important network of radio and television of the the United States. It was one of the three televisual independent groups of the country before the arrival of the cable televisions. CBS is the property of Viacom (2004).

History of the chain

What will become CBS is founded in 1927 as “a Columbia Broadcasting System”, a Joint-venture between Columbia Records and the artistic agent Arthur Judson. It emits for the first time the September 18th 1927 as a The Columbia Phonograph Broadcasting System with forty seven radio stations. The network is not profitable at the conclusion of its first year, and the January 18th 1929 Columbia Records resells its shares for 400.000 dollars with a group of private investors carried out by William S. Paley. The network is famous The Columbia Broadcasting System . During the nine years which follow, Columbia Records and Columbia Broadcasting System are two companies without any bond.

Soon, CBS counts more associates than each of the two networks of NBC.

In 1938, the industry of the radio became advantageous whereas the industry of the disc was still not concerned the crisis of 1929. CBS repurchases then its old parent company Columbia Records.

CBS produces its first television programs in 1939 with a daily programme of one hour to New York. The following year, CBS inaugurates television color with a standard which is incompatible with the stations black and white. The standard is rejected by FCC with the profit of the standard developed by RCA, which results in to slow down the investments of CBS in television for several years.

Since the end of the year 1980, CBS Records does not form any more part of group CBS but was repurchased by the giant of Japanese electronics Sony which renamed it Sony Music Entertainment.

Nowadays, CBS is the television channel more looked in the United States, in particular thanks to programs such as the Experts , Everyone loves Raymond or Survivor , which joins together all on average between 20 and 25 million faithful. CBS seems indétrônable now in front of ABC, and very far in front of the chain a long time considered as n°1: NBC. However CBS has evil to be detached from its image of chain “for old man”, all his series being “COP-shows” targeted on the 30-60 years.
