The CAR-15 (Colt model 607)

Colt introduced a family of derived from the AR-15 under the name of CAR-15 (for Colt Automatic Riffle-15) in May 1964. This family then included/understood two traditional rifles, two heavy gun rifles (HBAR) being used as light machine guns (the M1 model being fed by chargers and m2 per band), a rifle with gun of 16 inches, a rifle with a gun of 10 inches presented like SMG, i.e. machine pistol, and a " survival rifle" for the aviators. In July 1965 the USAIB tests in Fort Benning CAR-15 SMG and CAR-15 HBAR M1.
CAR-15 SMG had received the name of model 607 per Colt. In fact and in spite of its size it was not of a machine pistol but about a M-16 shortened. The gun made 10 inches length instead of 20, the hand-shields being similar to the M-16 but shorter, and the stick was identical to that of the M-16 but shortened of 3 inches. The gun ended in flash-concealers with three prèces identical to that of the M-16 first model. Although Foster Sturtevant of the Colt firm deposited a patent in September 1964 for a selector of shooting to four positions " Safe-semi-Burst-Auto" (safety, semi-car, limited gust, free gust) for family CAR-15, CAR-15 SMG was equipped with the traditional selector Safe-Semi-Car. This addition made it possible to have a firepower comparable with the M-16 in a more reduced format.
An order of 2050 CAR-15 SMG placed in January 1966, increased of 765 others weapons the next month. These weapons were used by Special the Forces (of the " Verts" berets; US Army in Seals of Navy) in Vietnam. They never received official designation, and the troops called them simply CAR-15 (although in the beginning this name was a whole family of weapon, not only the SMG). The premères experiments of the combat emphasized some problems, the principal ones being the noise of the weapon and the strong flame of mouth which indicated the position of the gunner and plugged this one.

The CAR-15 Survival Air Force Files (M608 Colt)

Among family CAR-15 M608 Air Force Survival Rifle was, which was proposed to arm the pilots with USAF as arms with survival if they would be cut down, an idea undoubtedly inspired by the rifles m2 used by USAF and the pilots of helicopters in Vietnam. But USAF forever adopted this weapon, and only 10 prototypes were manufactured. Compared to M607, the 608 had a hand-shield and a stick out of metal tubes, and a shorter pistol grip.
