Colossus (Piotr “Peter” Nikolaievitch Rasputin) is a character of Cartoon of the series X-Men of Marvel Comics. Created by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum, it appears for the first time in Giant-Size X-Men number 1 in May 1975.
History of the character
Member of X-Men
Piotr Nikolaievitch Rasputin was born in a collective farm from Siberia, close to the Lac Baïkal, at the time of the Soviet Union. His/her parents are Nikolai Rasputin and Alexandra Natalya Rasputina. They have a Mikhail oldest son and a girl Illyana junior. This one is very protected by Piotr, which adores it.
Piotr discovers its capacities while trying to save his/her Illyana sister who was going to be made crush by a tractor.
The youth of Piotr is happy because he saw in an area that he likes and with nice and attentive people. The revelation of its capacity transferring cuts it neither of its family, nor of her friends. When the Professor Xavier contacts it to propose to him to integrate its school of the young mutants, it is rather hesitant. Finally, it agrees to leave for the United States and to belong to new the X-Men, the second group rested by the Professor to protect the population from the dangers related to the bad mutants.
Piotr, called Peter once emigrated in the USA, chooses Colossus like name of Super-héros. He works hard to develop his capacity to transform his body into indestructible organic metal. Its appearance is then modified, its skin takes the color of steel. Its change confers a superhuman force (it can raise a weight of one hundred tons), a practically unbounded resistance and the possibility to him of living without oxygen, food or water.
Colossus finds with his/her X-Men companions at the same time the friendship and the love. Kitty Pryde (Spark) and live a history of love to him during several years. During the “Wars Secrecy”, Colossus however has an adventure with another. Feeling guilty, it breaks with Kitty. They keep a strong and sincere friendship then.
Colossus has evil to accept that his/her Illyana little sister is also mutant and that it is captive in the limbs during several years, then becoming also a super-heroin under the name of Magik.
Worse, when Illyana dies of the Legacy virus and that his/her parents die in their turn, Colossus disillusioned and is joined Magneto, the worst enemy of X-Men. It however changes opinion after some time and recognizes its error. It turns over at X-Men while preserving a particular pain vis-a-vis the heavy losses which it endured. It forms also part of Excalibur.
Businesses of family
In the mini-series Colossus: Bloodline (translated in X-Men Out of the ordinary 26) one discovers the sad bond which links Piotr has Sinistre: its back grandfather Grigori Iefimovitch Rasputin, which was used as guinea-pig in Sinistre for creates " its news race" , was killed, but before dying it gave to its wives her energy, which was transmitted to its descendants.
The goal of Disaster is that all these descendants die except one so that Grigori returns in the surviving one. The uncle de Piotr, Vladimir, immola in front of Piotr and Larissa, her cousin, who was made kill by Sinistre. There thus remained two Rasputin: Piotr and his/her Mikhail brother.
Mikhail, under the influence of Disaster, is thus this surviving: it téléporta Piotr on a place lost of the universe before realizing that he had been misled by Sinistre. It returned to seek his brother and they fought Sinistre unit before Mikhail does not decide to be exiled in black Zone thus preventing Sinistre from carrying out its plan.
Died and resurrection
When the Deer manufactures a vaccine against the Legacy virus, there is a great disadvantage: a mutant must be sacrificed to activate it. Against the opinion of his/her X-Men friends, Colossus injects itself the substance so that more no mutant dies like his/her sister. Its tests discover his body then, seems it without life and believe it dead.
In fact, an Extraterrestrial named Ord ressuscite Colossus whereas it to lie, dying. Ord then keeps it imprisoned in a laboratory, using it like guinea-pig in order to manufacture a vaccine against the embarrassments mutants. X-Men end up discovering Ord and its den. Kitty Pryde then manages to release Colossus. This one is avenged on pitiless Ord of way.
Colossus turns over once more at X-Men and tries to join again with its love of always.
Mutant capacities
Colossus has the capacity to simply transform its skin into a indestructible organic steel by its will. This metal would be Osmium (organic?) as it is rather often suggested, one of the two densest materials existing on ground. Under its human aspect, it is already an athlete: he has a considerable force without being superhuman for as much (comparable with that of a haltérophile heavy truck). He measures 1,98 m for 113 kg.
When it becomes Colossus, its body grows up to 2,25 m and its weight increases until at least 220 kilos (certain sources say much more, perhaps because of the density of this metal, but they are not majority). The explanation of this profit of weight and size is unknown.
Transformed, Colossus also has a superhuman force. At the beginning of its career of X-Man, he is very young man and can raise about seventy tons. Once reached its maturity, it is a weight of one hundred tons which it can raise without effort!
This transformation gets for Colossus a quasi invulnerable metal armor. It can resist the extreme temperatures or the anti-tank missiles without any damage. Colossus as proved as it did not need air (or almost) to live when it is in its metal form. Its muscles almost do not produce lactic acid, which confers a quasi unlimited endurance to him. In fact, nobody knows, even not him, how long it could remain in this form. There are all the same limits with its resistance: he would not survive the action of a nuclear weapon or a molecular disintegrator, and it is supposed that a sufficiently intense heat (the melting point of the Osmium is 3306 Kelvins or 3032,75 Centigrade) could dissolve it.
Colossus cannot however not change partially . There is either entirely of flesh, or entirely of metal, it is no intermediate state. Even its eyes become metal and can resist large shootings gauges (45 hundredths of inch). If ever Colossus, when it is transformed, is made unconscious for any reason, its body becomes again normal instantaneously.
Ultimate X-Men
In the alternative history of the Ultimate X-Men , Colossus is trafficker of weapons and sends the money which it gains in Russia with his family. It joined X-Men after its mutant capacity appears when it survives a shooting. In the crossover Ultimate War , Colossus beats even God Thor. In this version, it is homosexual and has a laison with Véga, raises Emma Frost.
