Collonge-Bellerive

Collonge-Bellerive is a common Suisse of the Canton of Geneva.

History

Enclosed between Chablais and the territorial possessions of the Republic of Geneva, this area bordering on Faucigny caused torment with the Genevese authorities well, throughout its history.

If one can affirm that the church of Collonge exists at least since 1153, the parish, as for it, is certainly older. Until the Reform, it depended on the priory of Saint-Jean-out-the-Walls.

Towards the end of the war of independence of Geneva, the territory of Collonge-Bellerive posed new political problems with its neighbor, which had with the presence of the Berneses which intended to maintain their sovereignty there. Collonge-Bellerive returned to Savoy for finally being yielded to Geneva by the treaty of Turin of March 16th, 1816

Economy

The commune, after a past dedicated to agriculture, has a primarily residential vocation today. One counts there however many artisanal companies, trade and liberal professions.

Geography

Collonge-Bellerive is located on left bank of the Lac Léman. The commune is primarily made up by the villages of Collonge and Vésenaz, as well as hamlets of Saint-Maurice, Bellerive and Repentance.

Curiosities

  • Natural reserve of the Point-with-the-North wind. It is one of oldest natural reserves of the canton, it was classified by the Council of State in 1933. Since the oldest times, the inhabitants of Collonge and Vésenaz had their common pastures there, and it is under the denomination the “communal ones” that the North wind appears in the first documents which reached us: last feudal recognitions in 1432 in favor of the Abbey of Bellerive which had surrounding grounds.

Armorial bearings

These weapons are those of the family of Plonjon, lords of Bellerive. The seigniory of Bellerive belongs to the Plonjon family of 1565 to 1666. She gave several magistrates to the republic of Geneva. The syndic Louis Plonjon was one of the members of the party of Eidguenots of the time of Berthelier
