College Champollion (Grenoble)
The college Champollion , or " Champo" is an establishment French of secondary education and superior located at Grenoble, 1 Cours La Fontaine, two steps of the place Victor Hugo. Currently, it is under the direction of Mr. Coppere.
Older second College of Grenoble after Stendhal, the Champollion college is initially known for the relative quality of his Preparatory classes, making college the traditional place of management training of the Dauphiné and Savoy.
History
Beginning of the XVIIIe century until 1887, the current Stendhal college is the single establishment of secondary education of Grenoble and the Isere. Among its pupils, it counted some Jean-François Champollion. The time of Jules Ferry, about 1880, privileges public education in and Grenoble, a mayor, Edouard Rey, assistance with the movement of schooling while benefitting from the demographic expansion which the city knows then.It is in 1882 qu ' is decided the construction of a new college on a ground of 28000 square meters located between the old fortifications and the new district of the station. It is then planned for 1000 pupils (400 interns, 100 school lunchers, 500 external). Its budget of construction will not have to exceed 2 million. In fact it will reach 3 million and half, shared per half between the city and the state. The municipality has recourse to an architect of reputation, Grand Prix of Rome, realizer of the Lycée Buffon with Paris and Prison of health: Emile Vaudremer. One lésigna not on the quality of materials employed: wood of the forests of Chartreuse, stones of Villebois (Ain) and of Estaillade (Drome); on hygiene and comfort: central heating with vapor, mains drainage. But one remained about it with lighting with gas!
The college is inaugurated for the re-entry of October 1887 being the subject of many criticisms. Ones bearing on the financial going beyond, the others on its qualified architecture, with the choice, of " mégisserie" , of " drier with tabac" , even " of hospital of incurables". Edouard Rey will not be re-elected in 1888, and the construction of the new establishment does not seem to have been foreign with its electoral failure.
In 1923, this college of boys will be baptized Champollion, after having failed to take the name of Barnave. But 1923 marked the centenary of the deciphering of the hiéroglyphes and it was the occasion to pay homage to two brothers very related to the Grenoble-native life, and more particularly to Jean-François, become famous since his discovery.
Statue of room of professors is only one copy of plaster of Bartholdi (model itself of marble work which one finds in the court of the Sorbonne), the original having been recovered by current the Musée of painting at the time of its opening.
At the beginning, the establishment accommodated pupils of the childish classes (5-6 years) to the preparatory classes (Saint Cyr and Special Mathématiques), so that one could spend 13 years of its youth there. With the wire of the decades, it will lose its primary classes, then its first cycle, will see inflating the second cycle and multiplying the preparatory classes. Envisaged for 1000 pupils, it will accommodate some up to 2500, of which 200 only will be always interns.
Many adventures will mark its existence: the war, reforms, slings school, constituting a dense and coloured history, but however similar to that of good of other colleges of big cities.
Preparatory classes
The college Champollion, principal establishment of secondary education of the Dauphine-Savoy area, has in particular the role to prepare pupils with the various contests of the French Universities.
It thus comprises preparatory classes with the High Commercial Teaching (HEC), preparatory classes scientific and literary preparatory classes.
In 2007, approximately 800 pupils studied in " prépa" with the Champollion college. Their origin is varied: if the major part of them comes from the Rhone-Alps area, those which come from the remainder of the country as from abroad constitute a whole of important size which confers on the college a creditable diversity. Thereafter, in contact with their comrades and of the city, the whole of the pupils acquires a certain identity from the Dauphine and in particular Grenoble-native which, since more than one century, distinguishes the old ones from " Champo" , and makes their pride.
The policy of the college as for the preparatory classes is very precise: to give the means to any pupil who wishes it and who has the capacities of them to prepare big competitions successfully. For as much, this unquestionable opening of the preparatory classes to a large audience is not paradoxical with the success with the contests and the reputation of the college for its preparatory classes HEC on the one hand, and scientists on the other hand, is not any more to make, as the classifications published attest it each year by the specialized press. Finally, following the example college of the Park to Lyon or college Pierre de Fermat in Toulouse, the Champollion college of Grenoble east from now on a common denominator to many pupils of the best French Universities.
