College Albert-Châtelet

The college of Anchin was located at Douai (Northern) until the end of the 17th century. After restoration today, it is called college Albert-Châtelet .

From 1562 to 1765: the college of Anchin

With the approval of Philippe II, king d' Espagne, and with the assent of papacy, the construction of this college starts since 1562. It is then inaugurated in 1568, one affirms whereas it will have “to be used as example with all Christendom”.

Teaching is exempted there by Jésuites, under the patronage of the abbey and the control of the Université of Douai, created, it, in 1561.

Quickly, the teaching exempted with the college of Anchin meets one big hit. The college of Anchin drains pupils of all Europe. From 1765 to our days: great changes

In 1765, the order of the Jésuites is dissolved in France. The establishment becomes royal college then, then national college in 1790.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the town of Douai decides to recover the buildings to install a Lycée there.

Royal college after the fall of the Empire, one again finds a college there after the revolution of 1848.

During the two world wars, the buildings are requisitioned, and one installs there successively a hospital and a barracks. With leaving the Second world war, the damage is very important. The college by several times rebuilt or is restored.

It entirely was finally renovated in the years 2000; it is now the college Albert-Châtelet, of the name of one of its former students, very famous in the academy of Lille.
