Collar of the Republic

The collar of the Republic or collar of the large wood is located on D1082 (ex- NR 82), it connects Saint-Etienne to the valley of the Rhone. It crosses the mounts of the Pilat at an altitude of 1161 Mr.

The construction of this way was completed in 1830.

The republic term also carried by a nearby hamlet refers to a sect nun which had tried to found in 1794, a small state, the republic of Jesus-Christ.

At the top, was set up momument with the memory of Paul de Vivie, more known under the pseudonym Vélocio. To perpetuate its memory, each year is organized the timed rise of this rise of 12 km uneven of 565m.

This collar was the theater of attack by partisans of the regional runner Antoine Faure against his adversaries at the time of the Tour de France 1904. These facts led the organizers to avoid the department of the Loire during many years. The following crossing of the collar took place only at the time of the Tour de France 1950.
