Collar of Montets

The collar of Montets carries out the connection between the valley of Chamonix (and more generally the Vallée of Arve) in France, and the Valais in Suisse. It culminates with 1461 Mr.

The site

The country cottage of reception of the Natural reserve of the needles Rouges is located at the collar of Montets. A botanical path makes it possible to the visitors to discover alpine fauna and the flora.

The 46 parallel passes near the top of the coll It is materialized by a wrought iron plate, installed within the framework of an educational project of the schoolboys of the valley of Chamonix.

Road link and railway

The Ligne Saint-Gervais-Vallorcine crosses the collar by a tunnel (1  the 883 m, longest of the line) named tunnel of Montets .

The Trunk road 506 (displaced in D 1506 in 2006) passes by the top of the coll the road is regularly closed in winter, because of the risk of Avalanche S. When it is the case, the cars can borrow the railway tunnel, which was especially arranged: a narrow roadway was built beside the way. A system of alternate circulation automobile trains/is then set up. This road continues in Switzerland, where it makes it possible to join Martigny via the Col of Forclaz.

The collar of Montets in the Tour de France

Since 1947, the collar of Montets was climbed five times by the Tour de France cyclist:

  • in 1959 (rise except Grand Prix of the mountain ), in the stage Saint-Vincent - Annecy;
  • in 1963 (classified in 3rd category), in the stage Valley of Isere - Chamonix;
  • in 1966 (classified in 2nd category), in the stage Ivrea - Chamonix;
  • in 1969 (classified in 2nd category), in the stage Thonon-the-Baths - Chamonix;
  • in 1977 (classified in 3rd category), in the stage Morzine - Chamonix.
