Collar of Belate
The collar of Belate , 847 m, is a collar Pyrénéen and Navarrese on the Watershed, allowing the communication between Pampelune and the valley of the Bidassoa (Baztan, Cinco Villas). It constitutes a big step on the way of Saint Jacques de Compostelle known as " Way of Baztan " connecting Bayonne to Pampelune.
During centuries, the collar of Belate ( puerto of Belate in Spanish) was used as transportation route between the interior of the Navarre and the grounds of the Labourd, Low-Navarre and the Guipuzcoanes coasts. A point of a high strategic value which suffered from modifications during its historical past. Curiously in Belate one maintained the old roadway, empierré main road on which one can see not less than ten seven Menhirs on his heights.
There exist studies which make think that this roadway of Belate can date from the II E, III E century, i.e. the time of the occupation Romaine and that one thinks of having been a way connecting the Gaulle with Pampelune.
