Collapse of the tunnel of Vierzy

The collapse of the tunnel of Vierzy is an arrived rail crash on June 16th, 1972 in France; the vault of the Tunnel of Vierzy, crumbled in the passing of two rail-cars, wedging the two trains in the ploughed up tunnel.

The assessment is extremely heavy: 108 died and 111 wounded, is the rail crash most fatal in France since 1933. The vibration generated by the simultaneous passage of the Autorails made crumble the very decayed vault of the tunnel.

The tunnel was rebuilt and a monument was set up in Vierzy. Another tunnel of the line, built according to the same standards, was also put in single track to avoid with the trains crossing.

According to a monument close to the church (unused) saint-Leger with Soissons, the bodies of the 108 victims were buried there, a list of the victims is reproduced on this monument.
