Coldwave

Coldwave (vague cold) is a musical genre appeared at the end of the Années 1970 and which knew its hours of glory primarily in the first part of the Années 1980. One can regard it as a sub-genus of the current New Wave , of which it radicalizes the minimalism and the coldness. Coldwave is also close to the current No wave of the same period.

History

Some consider that they are certain experiments of the Sixties, in particular those of the Velvet Underground, which are the oldest roots of Coldwave. One can also quote the album Low of David Bowie, with the electronic and cold experiments influenced by the Krautrock (Kraftwerk, Can, Neu!), as well as the album Marquee Moon of Television, from which the singular play of guitar and the skinned song of Tom Verlaine precede the punk post to come. The beginnings of the industrial Music and groups it Throbbing Gristle them also preceded emergence by Coldwave.

But one of the first founders groups of the " son" typical of Cold was Joy Division whose singer, Ian Curtis, committed suicide in May 1980, left a great memory and a great influence. The minimalism, the rates/rhythms martial and the sound icy of the group of Manchester, as well as the voice of Ian Curtis (its type of song, serious and often with the limit of the forgery), will be enormously imitated in the following decade.

Coldwave (and other close movements, like the punk Post, the Gothic Rock'n'roll or the Batcave) was born from the movement Punk, which incarnated two essential phenomena: accessibility for all with the music and the revolt of the young people vis-a-vis the Establishment and at a company in distress.

The Coldwave is this says a term which one allotted to a certain number of groups starting from 1979 without in so far as there is a real unit of kind. The coherence of the style holds of a certain rhythmic offset, the use of cold sonorities, the lugubrious use of the voice with words turned towards the anguish, the weariness of the life and the discomfort.

Among the artists and the fans who incarnated the style Coldwave (sobriety), the Batcave or the Gothic Rock, some were sometimes indicated under the term “ corbel ” as much because of their way of dressing itself in Noir that because of a certain analogy with birds of ill omen .

Its Coldwave

Contrary to the pluparts of the currents rock'n'rolls of the time, the style is characterized by the prevalence of the rhythm section, generally slow and heavy, the frequent use of synthetizers, the guitars in overprinting sometimes voluntarily dissonant.

It is a tendency where the artists can express their difficulty in existing in a company in full upheaval. One can see a certain existential discomfort there, sometimes impresses poetry beyond the instinctive and energetic rejection of the Punk. Each group expresses a tendency, an esthetics, a creativity, a clean personality. In the “classified as” groups Coldwave one can quote: Joy Division, The Cleans, Bauhaus, Trisomie 21, Tunnelvision, Section 25, Wire, Cabaret Voltaire, Crispy Ambulance, The Names, Dramarama, Public Image Limited, The Sound, Clair Obscure, Marquis de Sade, has certain ratio, Japan, The Church, The Durutti column, And Also The Trees or Tuxedomoon.

Groups less underground like The Cleans, Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen or Siouxsie and the Banshees knew artistic periods close to this kind. The Cleans, with its trilogy Seventeen Second , Faith and Pornography , directly influenced generations of groups cold (name of a piece of the album Pornography , moreover).

On its side, the services minimalists of Depeche Mode (under the influence of Vince Clarke) contributed to this new English music scene, although resting exclusively on a melody work with the Synthétiseur.

Evolution of the scene

Many are the classified groups " coldwave" who disappeared as of the medium from the years " 80". Others made evolve their music to the pop one (The Cure), the electronic musics (New Order) or the mystico-Eastern music (Dead Can Dance) and still remain.

One can observe since the beginning of the years 2000, an influence of the cold-wave (and in particular of Joy Division) in the pop one, through groups like Interpol, Editors or She Wants Revenge or I Coils You But I' ve Chosen Darkness.

In parallel, until the end of the Nineties, of the underground groups to confidential pullings made perdurer the style. In particular in France where existed a prolific scene.

One also notes in current France an renewed interest for these groups of the Eighties, in particular those of the French underground, which is the subject of republications for the amateurs.
