Colônia Cecília
The Colônia Cecilia is an experiment of practical application anarchistic principles which saw the day with the Brésil in 1890 in the State of the Paraná. It is the most known aspect of Italian anarchism with Brazil and its first demonstration.
It is probable that if the legend had not seized the history of Cecilia, by transmitting some a diverted version of the truth, the Community experiment would not have struck imaginations so much. Indeed, in spite of the presence of some former colonists of Cecilia in the anarchistic movement of São Paulo and in the anarchistic press in Brazil, neither the colony, nor its founder Giovanni Rossi left deep traces in the history of the Labor movement so much Italian only Brazilian. Despite everything, the Cecilia colony constitutes a very original episode which confers its notoriety on Italian anarchism in Brazil. On the other hand, one often forgets to recall that the Cecilia colony is also strongly related to the history of the Italian emigration in Brazil because, by many aspects, the experiment of the colonists of Cecilia is very close to that of the other Italian emigrants of the end of the 20th century. Cecilia is born besides at the moment when the wave of Italian emigration towards Brazil is strongest.
As for the character of the founder of Cecilia, Giovanni Rossi, whose step is completely marginal in the Italian political context of the time, it is indissociable history of the colony. This history deeply marked it: important ideological changes take place in him after the end of the experiment. The Rossi anarchist fights for what it calls the experimental socialism, which starts well before Cecilia. The combat to be carried out is all the more hard as Rossi hardly finds sympathizers with his project in the various socialist currents but it côtoie until its departure in 1890. The adventures of Cecilia and the mishaps of its colonists will be growing, until the end of the experiment.
