The operating systems Coherent was created in 1983 by late the Mark Williams Company like one of the first systems of the type UNIX for PC-compatible IBM computer. Coherent was able to turn on the majority of the PC at Intel base like the Processeur 286, 386, and 486 and, like a truth Unix, was capable of Multitâche and to have of multiple users. Coherent also X11 supported.

Coherent is some times compared inopportunely to a “Coherent Unix”, which is incorrect. Coherent was based on the specifications of Unix Version 7, without reference none on the Source code Unix, contrary to Bell Labs or BSD.

The major part of the system was written by ex-students of the Université of Waterloo: Tom Duff, Dave Conroy, Randall Howard, and Johann George.

The Mark Williams Company made bankruptcy in 1995.
