Codex Purpureus Beratinus

Codex Purpureus Beratinus is composed of two Évangile S (Codex) very old overdrafts with Berat, (Albania), “ Beratinus-1 ” of the 6th century and “ Beratinus-2 ” of the 9th century, making both part of the seven “Codex crimson S” having survived until our days. Two of the “Codices crimsons” are located in Albania, two others in Italy, one in France, one in England and the last with Athens.

“Beratinus-1” - 6th century - is a handwritten Gospel in letters uncial, in capital letters. It represents one of the three or the four oldest prototypes of New Testament, testimony of reference of the development of the biblical and liturgical literature in the world.
“Beratinus- 2” - 9th century - contains texts of Gospel of the period of the standard texts. Certain paragraphs are in uncial semi writing. According to its style and its seniority, it is comparable with the Codex gr. 53 (Petersbourg). It contains the four complete Gospels.
the two Albanian codices constitute a base of great importance for the world community and the development of the hurdy-gurdy biblical, liturgical and hagiographic literature. The seven “Codices crimsons” follow one and the other during thirteen centuries, namely of 6th at the 18th century. The two codices represent one of the most important richnesses of the cultural heritage of Albania.
