Codes of the currencies

Codes of the currencies of the world (ISO 4217).

Index by code

The codes in italic are not codes ISO 4217 standards but used in certain financial markets and reserved:
  • (−) the codes followed by a minus sign officially do not have any more course and are not negotiable any more.
  • (*) These codes correspond to virtual or private currencies on specialized markets, not recognized on the international markets and unguaranteed by a government. However, they make it possible participating partners to facilitate the exchanges of goods or services, the national plan or sometimes international. They are managed by private banking.

In addition to the codes above, the following special codes are defined but do not correspond to any negotiable currency:

  • XTS : code reserved to carry out tests (no effective contractual transaction, inconvertible currency, no exchange transaction authorized, no taking away of expenses of transaction).
  • XXX : code reserved for contractual transactions carried out without associated currency (for example transfer of information on the nonmonetary characteristics of an account, a contract or a transaction, null foreign exchange rate, but taking away of associated expenses of possible transaction in another currency).

  • (*) In French, the kind of these currencies is in general male; the currencies of female kind are marked below asterisk.
  • the historical currencies which do not have any more official course are indicated in the last column by the code of (or of) the new (S) currency (S) which (or A) succeeded to them.
