Code offenses and sorrows
Published by taking again the title of a work of the Marquis de Beccaria , the Code of the offenses and sorrows was set up by the national Convention the 3 Brumaire Year IV (1791) to replace the criminal Ordonnance of 1670.
With 646 articles, it is at the same time a code which treats legal Organsation, Criminal procedure and sorrows.
For the sorrows, it is characterized by the suppression of the afflictive sorrows, except the capital punishment, and the creation of the custodial sentences, of which the most severe form, called Peine of the Embarrassment , is a one fifty years duration reclusion, incompressible, in a cell without window, nor communication of any kind with other external people or recluses.
There will remain in force until its replacement by the criminal Instruction code in 1807 and by the Penal code in 1810.
