Code list AITA of the airline companies

The codes IATA of the airline companies are codes with two letters, allotted by the International association of air transport (AITA or IATA in English), with different the airline companies from the whole world, against a payment of 2.000 Dollar S. This code is used, supplemented by four digits, to constitute the Numéro of flight which makes it possible to identify each accomplished flight.

In English, this code is called Airline Designator . The code is used to identify a Airline company for all the business transactions which relate to it. It is allotted by the AITA in conformity with the provisions of the Resolution n° 762. It is used in particular for the reservations, the schedules, the tickets, the tariffs, the air invoices, the flights and for many internal communications. The AITA allots three types of code to two letters:

  • single (two letters),
  • alphanumeric (a figure, a letter)
  • double controlled (indicated by an asterisk - *, after the code) and given to two different companies which cannot be confused - because for example they do not operate in the same area of the world.

The AITA also allots these codes to companies which are not airline companies but which operate in the railways, the Ferry-boat S, but also at data-processing companies managing of the reservations or at other organizations of transport. They are generally alphanumeric codes.

Since 1987, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) also allots codes to three letters, which are in process of adoption by the AITA - but which will not replace the code with two letters. It however is recommended to maintain initials AITA.
