Cocosates

The Cocosates were Aquitanian people west of the department French of the Landes.

Their nickname of Cocosates sexsignani (Cocosates with the six standards) indicated that they federated six tribes.

Bordered by the Tarbelles of Dax in the south and the Boïates of the Country of Buch (Arcachon) in north, one generally places them in Brassenx and Pays of Born. Certain authors locate them as of the Adour in Maremne and Marensin.

Their name evokes the Basque kokots “chin”. It seems based on a redoubling of the root Aquitanique *koiz/coç “hillock”, “height”, root that one also finds it in Cossium , capital of the Vasates.
