There are 3 geographical areas: the basin of Malaucène in north, piémonts of the Mount Ventoux in the East of Carpentras and the north of Calavon until Apt. The climate is of Mediterranean type, moderate in limit of the surface by the presence of the solid masses of the Ventoux Mount and the Mounts of Vaucluse.

Grounds

The vineyard is located in major part on sediments deposited by the seas of the tertiary era at the base of the calcareous solid mass of Ventoux. The grounds are especially Mediterranean red grounds, falls and old alluvia.

History

The first archaeological traces of the wines produced on the soil of coast-of-ventoux were discovered close to Carpentras and Apt. The first site, located at Mazan, the locality Jonquier, made it possible to update the workshop of a potter where the first known wine Amphores in France were manufactured. It was dated by Dominique Carru from Ier century before our era.

The second, on the territory of the commune of Saignon, is the site of Tourettes excavated again by Dominique Carru. Its team released the ruins of a Gallo-Roman villa primarily devoted to the production of oil and wine. She was destroyed by a barbarian horde about the year 275 of our era.

The first hard copies of the vineyards of Piedmont of the Ventoux date from IXe century. It was in 875 that Charles, king of Provence-Viennese, gave to Jean, bishop of Carpentras, the Unango villa, today Château Unang, on the commune of Malemort-of-Comtat, then the Cartulaire d' Apt, teaches us that in 890, Alexandria lady, sold its vineyard of Keyboards between Apt and Rustrel.

The identity of the first vine growers of Ventoux is known to us by an act deposited with the Secret Archives of the Vatican mentioning entry with Carpentras, in 1376, of Guillaume III Roger of Beaufort, the new vice-chancellor of the Comtat Venaissin. For the reunions which followed, Jean Guibanne provides approximately 460 liters of red wine, and his fellow-member Jean Guisinelle, 385 liters of white wine.

The States of Comtat Venaissin make draw up in 1414 their first land register. The communes which have the most vines are: Carpentras, Aubignan, Bédoin, It Castling-on-Pernes, City-on-Auzon and Beaucet.

The marquis de Rochegude, owner of a vineyard with Bédoin, proceeds to the first setting out of bottle in 1779. This eight years old wine is intended for the Royal Navy of Toulon and the members of Parliament of Grenoble and Aix-en-Provence.

André Julien publishes in 1832 its famous work “Topography of all the known vineyards”. At the heading “liqueur wines”, it classifies just behind the “wine of straw” of the Hermitage, the muscatel of Beaumes-of-Venice and Grenache de Mazan. This one will become a “wine of court” under the reign of Louis-Philippe.

In 1900, for the first time appears name “Coasts of Ventoux”. This baptism takes place for… a wedding banquet. On the menu is penmanship “wines of the Coasts of Ventoux and the Notches”. These wines all are vintage and gone back to 1870,1890 and 1895, that is to say old wines from 5 to 30 years.
