In the south is more the high summits:

Geology

The three great landscape entities of Lorraine are, of West in East:
  • the Coasts of Meuse and the Moselle
  • the Lorraine plate
  • Vosgean solid mass

The relief of the west of Lorraine, of ascending average slope towards the east, corresponding at the end of the Paris basin, is made of an alternation of valleys and plates separated by Cuesta S (reliefs of coasts) from direction south-north.

On the basis of the west, one distinguishes successively: the Argonne, coasts of Bar, the Coasts of Meuse and finally the coasts of the Moselle which exceed the 450 m of altitude.

Between Coasts of Meuse and Côtes of the Moselle extends the fertile plain from the broad Woëvre from 25 to 30 km.

The Meuse and the the Moselle run towards north in an argillaceous plain, many ponds and lakes are in the vicinity, such as the Lake of Madine

Vegetation

The coasts of the Meuse have particularly:
  • of the forests on plates limestones
  • of the cold small valleys
  • of the dry lawns

The plate of the Coasts of Meuse mainly occupied by calcicole Hêtraie is supported by a semi-oceanic, semi-continental climate and by a permeable soil with coppice under grove which supports the presence of other gasolines: Oak S, Charm S, Maple S, Ash S, Wild cherry tree S, Service-trees…

The shrubby layer comprises Cornouiller S, Aubépine S, Noisetier S, Jolibois, Fusain.

The herbaceous layer develops a carpet of Anémone Sylvie at spring, of Pervenche, Muguet in May, the Ancolie, the Sceau of Solomon along ways in June…

By places, the forest, replace lawns limestones (pasturages.) whose floristic composition rich and is varied (Graminaceous, leguminous, Orchidées).

With semi-slope of the coast, the man introduced the fruit-bearing culture. The Vigne was reimplanted, and of many planted orchards of Cerisier S, Framboisier S, Groseillier S, Pommier S, Mirabellier S, Poirier S, some Pêcher S give fruits of quality of which most famous and more important under the east coasts the Mirabelle which one makes preserved fruits, jams or brandy.

The plain of Woëvre formerly mainly covered with forests of Oak S and Charm S.A. cleared and drained and it is currently the field of the breeding of Bovins and the culture of Céréale S (Blé, Colza, Maïs).
