Coast-in Armor
Coast-with Armor ( Aodoù year Breton Arvor in , Graéy d' Armor in Gallo) ( 22 ) is the name of a department French located in Brittany.
This department draws its name
- from the word old Breton Br Armor , to which the geographical term Armorique is close, into Breton modern Br year Arvor (sea), in opposition to Br Argoad or Br Argoat (“country timbered”, by extension, interior of the grounds), on the one hand,
- of its old name, Coast-of-North, on the other hand.
History
The department was created with the French revolution, the March 4th 1790, pursuant to the law of the December 22nd 1789, on part of old the province of Brittany, composed of the east of the évêchés of Cornwall and Trégor, almost totality of the évêché of Saint-Brieuc (extreme south being attached to the Morbihan), of the North-West of the évêché of Saint-Malo, of one small portion in the west of the évêché of Fraud, as well as two small pieces in north of the évêché of Valves.
To the civilian, it extends on the counties from Penthièvre and Trégor, increased essence of the Poudouvre and north parts of the Poher and Porhoët. It thus takes again an important part of the old kingdom of Domnonée (from which the name disappears at the 11th century). The formation of this department was very discussed. The western part wanted a department centered on Morlaix gathering the North-West of Brittany. The town of Saint-Malo wanted that a department was formed around it, with the detriment of Saint-Brieuc and Rennes, but this project did not have any support of the representatives of the other Breton cities. Finally, the department of the coasts of the north of Brittany extended until the Rance, St-Malo obtaining only some communes facing him on left bank of the Rance (of which Dinard). The town of Saint-Brieuc obtained to be the chief town about it, with the detriment of Quintin, another candidate as populated as it.
During two centuries, the department bore the name of Coast-of-North . A long time criticized and judged devaluing, this name was changed into 1990 - nearly thirty years after in 1962 the general advice gave an favorable opinion in this direction - for Coast-with Armor , plus enchanter, and literally meaning “Coasts of the country of the sea”.
