Coast-in-the Or (British colony)

See also: Coast-with Or (homonymy)

The Coast-with-the Or was a British colony , in what today became the Ghana. This colony was created in 1821, when the government confiscated the grounds bordering the coasts. Coast-in-the Or had been named thus for a long time by Europeans, because of the significant amounts of Or found in this area.

Since its creation, the colony was constantly developed because of the wars against the local tribes, the confederation Ashanti and the other European countries who had colonies in the area.

In 1946, the British Togoland, the Protectorate Ashanti, the Protectorate Fante and Coast-in-the Or were joined together in only one colony, commonly called Coast-with-the Or . In 1957, the colony became the State independent of the Ghana.
