Coal dust

The coal dust is a whole of fine particles of highly flammable dust of Carbone present during the exploitation of the mines of coal.

Suspended in the air, coal dust is at the origin of Explosion S fatal; one also speaks about dust explosion . It is the generally allowed cause of the Catastrophe of Courrières, most important in France, having made officially: 1099 victims.

The “modern” techniques of extraction mechanics, appeared in the Années 1950 increased considerably the production of this dust, which is also at the origin of the Silicose, lung disease of the minor.

Dust of grains in the storage bins presents the same risks.

One of the principal risks is related to the state of fine particle: indeed, coal needs air to burn, but in fine dust, it has a large surface of contact with the air.

Fight and protection

To fight against coal dust, the minors use various techniques:

  • to avoid the naked flames with in particular the use of the lamps of Davy
  • coating the lime walls and humidifying the galleries to fix dust
  • to place vats of water or sand in unstable balance “to kill” the breath.
