Coal-mining

The Borinage is a Belgian under-area located in Walloon region in the Province of Hainaut, in the west and the south-west of the town of Mons, at the western end of the industrial Sillon. It is an old mining site which gave formerly coal to the outcrop, in particular in the coal forest. The veins were prolonged beyond the border free - Belgian and one found the coal on the more in-depth French side, surface being covered with tertiary sediments. Later, the men dug mines. The technique evolved/moved so that the exploitation of coal mining of considerable size made Coal-mining one of the cradles of the industrial revolution after England.

Etymology and orthography

For the name of this area, the final, the suffix could one say, - old , gives a direction of collective, of group, even if, in French, this suffix has a pejorative direction more and more. the Robert gives: Coal-mining, common noun: together borins and also their work. the borins are the workmen of the mine here.

Two assumptions exist as for the etymology of the word borain, E :

  • Borain , or better, borin, E , would come from the Greek Βορέας (Boreas), word indicating the wind of north, by Latin boreas , whom one finds in French borated .
  • the other origin possible of the word would be the Dutch verb boren which means to drill , to dig . This second assumption is to be connected with the mining industry which strongly marked the area.

With regard to the orthography of the word, it is necessary to prefer borin, borinne , closer to the name of the area. The orthography borain had to be rebuilt in an erudite way, on female the borenne (in dialect) which would have given, by popular etymology, boraine , therefore borain with the masculine.

Sociology and policy

August 1st Coal-mining is one of the cradles of the Belgian Socialist party founded in 1885. Its text founder is the Charte of Quaregnon adopted in 1894. The fact that it was approved in Quaregnon and not in Mons explains by the events of 1893. At the beginning of April, the Belgian Room disallows a private bill tending to found the vote for all. The trade-union Commission of the POB decides whereas it is necessary to issue the general strike. As of on April 13rd, the disorders reach such a violence that Henri Pirenne written: the chiefs of the working party terrify turning of the events. With the Palate of the Nation, terror is larger still. on April 17th a column of demonstrators progresses since Jemappes towards Mons. At the level of the locality Tubular bridge (where the maternity of the same name rose a long time), some companies of the civic Garde bar the passage. The men of the civic guard shoot at crowd from the demonstrators. One raises seven dead and of many casualties. The following day, the Room votes the principle of the Vote for all which became effective the following year, principle moderated however by the plural vote (more than one vote for the capacitaires, the fathers, etc). The serious incident at the border of Mons and Jemappes caused such an anger in the working world that this one refused that the Congress of the POB planned for 1894 is held in Mons and thus the text founder of the POB carries the title of Charter of Quaregnon (another important commune of Coal-mining) and not of Mons. The economic conditions and social are there always very hard, with a reproduction of the misery moderated by the reforms of the Welfare state in the years 1960.
