Cluj-Napoca

Cluj-Napoca (pron. , until 1974 Cluj , Latin Claudiopolis , Hungarian Kolozsvár , German Klausenburg ) is the chief town of the Judeţ de Cluj. It is one of the academic centers, Culture ls and most important Industrie ls of Romania. It is the third town of Romania with a population of 318  027 inhabitants (2002). Regarded as the historical capital of the Principality of Transylvania, the city is located in the North-West of the country, with 440 kilometers of Bucharest, in the valley of the Someşul Mic.

History

Cluj-Napoca has a very rich historical heritage. The city is held on the site of a ancient habitat.

They are the Celts come from the west, who will train the people Daces and Galates which was installed the first on the site known under the name of Napoca , benefitting from a good fertility and of a good strategic situation (on 7 hill-like Rome) the city will also thrive thanks to the commercial relations maintained with the Greek colonies the Black Sea, Chersonessos, Oblia, Nymphaios… Later, the Romains made of it a colony . The city was inhabited primarily by Hungarian and Saxons German until in 1918, when Transylvania was attached to Romania.

It is in the Années 1970 that Nicolae Ceauşescu decided to add Napoca in the name of Cluj .

Demography

Today, the majority of the population is Rumanian (79,46%), and there exists an important Hungarian minority (18,86%). Beside these populations also communities Tziganes (0,96%) live, allemandes (0,22%) and Jewish (0,07%) (see the article Synagog of Cluj-Napoca).

Transport

The city is served by the international Aéroport of Cluj-Napoca ( airport Someşeni , code AITA: CLJ).

The network of Cluj-Napoca is partly ensured by of Renault R312 and Saviem Sc10u sold by the RATP.

Industry

An industrial brewery of Bière (Ursus) is installed downtown.

Culture

The French Arts center of Cluj offers many activities to the Roumanians who want to familiarize themselves with the language and the culture Frenchwomen and with the French eager to know some more about Romania and the town of Cluj.
