Club of Clichy
The Club of Clichy is a club formed the shortly after the fall of Maximilien de Robespierre, Thermidor 9 year II (July 27th, 1794).
This club was made up at the beginning of deputies of the Convention which, almost all had been stopped during the Terreur. After one period of sleep, the club starts to play a big role at the beginning of the Directoire. It is the point of rallying of the new deputies of moderated republican tendency, but also of partisans of a restoration of monarchy. It accommodates also former deputies of the Convention of right-hand side.
It is in a room with the bottom of the Rue of Clichy that this club was formed after the fall of Robespierre. It was made up at the beginning of deputies who all, almost, had been stopped under Terror. One found there Mathieu Dumas, Camille Jordan, Pierre Paul Royer-Collard, the Willot general… With the closing of the Club of the Jacobins in November 1794, the danger coming from the extreme-left growing blurred, the most republican members of the club of Clichy left it, not feeling more the need of a lobby against an almost disappeared danger.
After one period of sleep, the club of Clichy starts again to play a big role at the beginning of the Directoire. It is the point of rallying of the new deputies of moderate republican tendency like Siméon or Tronson-Ducoudray, but also of partisans of a restoration of monarchy like Imbert-Colomès or Lémérer. It accommodates also former deputies of the Convention of right-hand side like François-Antoine de Boissy d' Anglas and Henry-Larivière. The club of Clichy maintains close relationship with the press of right-hand side, the Flash , Veracious the , the Messenger of the evening , the new policies .
After the elections of 1797, the club of Clichy seems in position to dominate the Councils thanks to the new deputies, since it on the whole counts approximately 300 elected officials out of 750. Division is done between intransigent partisans of the re-establishment of the royalty around Gilbert-Desmolières who involves some 80 deputies, while the moderate ones joined together around Mathieu Dumas try to avoid the confrontation with the Directory. The club of Clichy manages to find its unit to make elect Balthazar François Barthélémy, his candidate with the Directory. The Coup d'etat of the 18 fructidor year V (September 4th, 1797) mark the end of its existence and a certain number of its members is off-set in Guyana.
