Clopas

The name of Clopas is quoted in the Évangile according to Jean:

“Close to the cross of Jesus was held his mother and the sister of her mother, Marie de Clopas and Marie de Magdala.” (Jn 19,25).
According to Hégésippe, quoted by Eusèbe de Césarée, Clopas is the brother of Joseph, and thus the uncle of Jesus (Hist. eccl. 3,11). Eusèbe de Césarée also states that he is the father of Siméon Ier of Jerusalem:
“All, of only one thought, decided that Siméon, wire of Clopas, which is mentioned in the book of the Gospel, was worthy of the seat of this Church: it was, says one, cousin of the Saver. Hégésippe tells indeed that Clopas was the brother of Joseph” (Eusèbe de Césarée Hist. eccl. 3,11).
  • In its book, The Jesus Dynasty , the biblical historian James Tabor postulates that Clopas is the second husband of Marie, mother of Jesus. Tabor explains why if Joseph died young person, as its absence in the writings suggests it, then it could, according to the Jewish tradition, to have married the widow of its brother. This assumption is justified by no text and even is contradictory with that of Jn 19,25 in which the mother of Jesus and Marie de Clopas are two different people who were both close to the cross.

Particular problems

  • Clopas is sometimes confused with Cléophas, one of the disciples who met Jesus ressuscity with Emmaüs. The two names are forms derived from Κλεοπατρος, Kleopâtros , which means " with the father glorieux" (cf the name Cléopâtre).
  • It also could be identified wrongly with Alphée in consequence of a confusion between the Greek Klopas and the araméen halpay or 'Alpay (cf encyclopedic Dictionary of the Bible , Brepols, 2002).
