Clipper chip

The Clipper chip (chip Clipper) is a project of Cryptoprocesseur conceived by NSA during the Années 1980. It was developed within the framework of a project of the American Administration intended to equip the electronic devices sold with the general public with a chip of safety. The key of coding was to be provided to the government which became thus able to listen to the communications so necessary.

Skipjack was the algorithm employed for coding within the Clipper chip , the chip was designed to resist the external modifications and made it possible the government to reach the data in light thanks to a mechanism named Law Enforcement Access Field (LEAF).

After the appearance of an attack in 1994 discovered by Matt Blaze, the project was abandoned in 1996. The appearance of software like PGP, which was not under control of the government, made obsolete the Clipper chip. The algorithms Skipjack and KEA were déclassifiés in 1998.
