Clinton Hart Merriam is a American zoologist , born the December 5th 1855 with New York and dead the March 19th 1942 with Berkeley (California).

His/her father, Clinton Levi Merriam, are a businessman and a banker who, briefly, of 1871 with 1875 sat at the American Congrès in the rows of the Republicans.

Very early, it meets Spencer Fullerton Baird (1823-1887) thanks to his father. It is thanks to the mediation of Baird that the Merriam young person can, during the summer 1872, to take part in a mission of research in the Yellowstone.

It makes studies in Sheffield Scientific School of the Université of Yale of 1873 with 1874 then at the Medical school and of surgery of New York of 1877 with 1879. It obtains its title of doctor in 1879.

Until 1885, it exerts medicine in New York and specializes in Gynécologie. In parallel, it continues to study the mammals and the birds. It takes part as naturalist in the forwarding of the S Proteus in Ground-New-and-Labrador. During the summer 1885, it visits the natural history musea and of the collections deprived in Europe.

It becomes ornithologist for the ministry for the Agriculture of 1885 where it is charged to collect information on the harmful species. Then as from the following year until in 1890, it directs the department of ornithology and economic mammalogy within this same ministry. Of 1890 with 1910, it always directs the research service of biology in the same organization. In 1899, it helps the tycoon of the railroads, Edward Henry Harriman (1848-1909), to organize a voyage of exploration of the coasts of Alaska.

It makes original research on the Biogéographie and the North-American Distribution of the S. It puts forth the assumption that the temperature makes it possible to explain the distribution of the fauna of this continent. He and its team make appear their results in the series North American Fauna as from 1889 and in other publications. He resigns in 1910 whereas the Congress makes pressure so that its service deals with the control of the harmful or undesirable species. He passes the remainder of his life to study the mammals, mainly the Ours like transcribing the Amerindian vocabulary of tribes born from California dying out.

Merriam directs the American Ornithologists' Union of 1900 to 1903.
