Biography

He learns how very young person to play of the accordion thanks to his father Joseph Chenier . He starts to literally play in the Bal S of Saturday evening with his brother Cleveland Chenier with the washboard (" board with laver" , musical instrument called " frottoir" in Louisiana).

In 1945 it leaves the family farm to go to work in the fields of cane with sugar. It then leaves towards Lake Charles to join his Cleveland brother. It there meets other musicians of zydeco and refines his style.

Its professional path starts in 1954, when it signs with Elko Record and records Cliston' S blues (under the name of Cliston Chanier ) which made a local success. It continues with Ay-téte-fairy ( He, little girl , the orthography of the title cajun knew many alternatives!) who made known it more largely.

It makes many rounds with the Zydeco Ramblers and signs with Chess Records in 1956. The Chess label does not do too much publicity to its discs. It leaves it in 1958 and settles with Houston.

It signs finally at Arhoolie Records in 1964 which widens its audience with the white public. The Europe accommodates it in 1969 with the American Folk Blues Festival .

In 1973 it signs the music of film of Alain Corneau France public limit company . In 1979 one diagnoses a serious diabetes to him and one must cut down it by a foot.

Its career is crowned by a Grammy Award in the Années 1980.

He dies in 1987 of a disease of the kidneys.

His/her son C.J. Chenier took the changing and continues his music by producing concerts and discs.
