Clifford Jarvis

Clifford Osbourne Jarvis , American beater born with Boston, Massachusetts the August 26th 1941, deceased the November 26th 1999 with London. It starts by playing of the Piano and of the Guitare but very quickly, at the ten years age, it chooses the battery. His/her father trumpet player encourages it to listen to discs of Art Blakey. Jarvis studies the battery with Alan Dawson in Berklee School oh Music and plays with Jaki Byard and Sam Rivers (1958-1959).

It settles in New York and works with Barry Harris, Chet Baker, Elmo Hope, Curtis Fuller, Yusef Lateef, Randy Weston, Coleman Hawkins, Eddie Davis, Johnny Griffin, Sony Stitt, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane… It records with Sun Ra. It accompanies at the end of the Sixties Pharoah Sanders and takes part in the concerts of Sun Ra. He also plays within a quartet where one finds the bass player Norris Jones. Later one will hear Jarvis at the sides of Kenny Drew (1977), of archie Shepp (1976-81, 1987), of the French trumpet player Michel Marre (1985), of the trumpet player Harry Beckett with Chris McGregor and Courtney Pine (1987). In 1991 it records in London with the saxophonist Jean All Saints' day.

Early Vistuose influenced by max Roach, it is an example of the beaters post-bop which thanks to their open-minded succeed in being integrated in various contexts and multiply polyrythmic research without to give up a Tempo and a rate/rhythm basic. Jarvis Clifford is a beater particularly at ease on its set of extremely various cymbals. It is also and especially an exceptional colourist who thanks to his energy brings to the group, beyond rhythmic promptness, a supplement of Polyphonie.
