Clichiens
After the blow of Thermidor and the end of Terror, the monarchical opposition to the mode reorganizes in the shape of clubs, in particular, around the club called Philanthropic Institut and more particularly for the deputies of the Club of Clichy. This club was accustomed to being assembled Rue of Clichy in the hotel of the notary Gilber Desmolières. It was mainly financed funds from England. Of a score of accustomed at the beginning, the club accommodates soon a hundred people. It is constant amongst other things by the " Newspaper of the elections ". Having resisted prohibitions of the clubs by the directory, it thoroughly organized the elections of 1797 which sees the victory of the royalists in the two Councils which then form the legislative power in France. The most important decisions of the country are caught from now on within a kind of abstract committee which gathers at Gibert.
But the club was crossed internal conflicts, between white on a side and constitutional Jacobins of the other. At the time of an attempt at its share to reverse the three republican directors who were hostile for him, it was reversed the 18 fructidor year V (September 4th 1797). One counted there Jean-Charles Pichegru, Pierre-Paul Royer-Collard, Camille Jordan, the Count de Vaublanc, Mathieu Dumas.
anecdote
- the members of this club had as a use to be greeted with the " guillotine " , i.e. by leaning of a dry blow the head ahead, whereas the remainder of the body remains right.
