Clementinum
The Clementinum ( Czech Klementinum in ), located in the Old city of Prague, shelters the Czech National library, founded in 1781 and as of 1782 Clementinum is used as Registration of copyright.
History
The history of the building goes back to a vault dedicated to Saint Clement, built at the 11th century. A Dominican convent is established there in 1227 which is transformed into 1556 in college Jesuit. In 1622, the Jesuits transfer the library from the Université Charles and amalgamate these two education institutions in 1654. It is at that time that, under the direction or with the assistance of architects such as Kilian Ignace Dientzenhofer, Carlo Lurago or Francesco Caratti, are built the majority of the buildings according to a style Baroque of which Prague, center key of the Counter-Reformation at the time was enamelled. The few 20.000 m ² built make of it the second more important construction of Prague after the Château.With dissolution about the Jesuits in 1773, Clementinum becomes a secular university and the library is proclaimed by the empress Marie-Therese imperial and royal College library .
During the 18th century, Clementinum is seen associating:
- the vault of the ices (1724), work of František Maxmilian Kaňka
- the college library (1727), work of František Maxmilian Kaňka
- the astronomical Observatory in 1722
- the Museum of the Mathematical , rested by the mathematician Joseph Stepling in 1751
- a Weather station in 1752, founded by Antonín Strnad
The University Charles is divided into 1882 in two entities, one Czech, other allemande and Clementinum fall to the Czech faculty of Philosophie and Théologie. From 1930, only the librarians activities remain there.
