Greenberg had been like many painters of the expressionnist generation of the School of New York, raises of the American painter of German origin Hans Hoffmann, the former assistant of Robert Delaunay. It is made known in 1939 by publishing an article “Art and Culture” in the Newspaper Partisan Review where it distinguishes the concept of “High Art” opposed to “Low Art”, cultivated art, of avant-garde and Moderne vis-a-vis popular art “kitch”, regarded as simple object of consumption.
Critical with respect to the evolution of the painters of the expressionism abstracted such as the critic Harold Rosenberg defended it to which Clement Greenberg reproached the mannerism of the key and the abandonment of the subject, it creates the critical concept of Post-Painterly Abstraction (post-pictorial abstraction) which wanted to be like a form of “purity” of painting, opposed to the gestural expresssionnist and Pop-Art. It divided into two categories: painters of the Hard-edge painting, painting of the form and the angles of which Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella and the painters of the Color-Field (Fields of Color) Helen Frankenthaler, Morris Louis who poured painting on fabrics not prepared to follow the effects of fluidity.
The list of the painters who it defended is long, one can quote: Friedel Dzubas, Helen Frankenthaler, Hans Hoffmann, John Hoyland, Ellsworth Kelly, Henri Matisse, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitsky, Jackson Pollock, Frank Stella…
Quotation
- Arts of avant-garde, in the last fifty years, reached a purity and made a success of a radical delimitation of their field of activity without example in the history of the culture. Arts are now in safety, each one inside its legitimate borders, and the free trade was replaced by autarky ( The Collected essays and criticism , J.O' Brian (ED.), University off Chicago Near, 1986, vol. 1, p. 23-37).
