Clement Duval

Clement Duval (born the March 11th 1850 with Paris; died the March 29th 1935 with New York) was a Anarchiste illegalist French, member of the group “the Panther of Batignolles”, in favor of the “Propagande by the fact” and of “revolutionary expropriation”.

Biography

Member of the anarchistic group “the Panther of Batignolles” Clément Duval tried to burglarize a private mansion pertaining to Mrs. Herbelin, who lived it with her niece, the painter Madeleine Lemaire, whose Marcel Proust loved the pinks. The October 17th 1886, during its arrest, Duval stabs the Sergeant Nightingale, who will escape with his wounds. Judged the January 11th 1887, Clément Duval is condemned to died and pardoned by the president of the Republic Jules Grévy. Its sorrow is then commuted to forced labors with perpetuity. Its defense had been ensured by Fernand Labori, young officially appointed lawyer, which will be later celebrates it defender of the Dreyfus captain.

Sent to the bagne of the Islands of the Hello, it tries several times to escape some before being transferred to the Bagne from Saint-Laurent-of-Maroni the. He manages to escape from it the April 14th 1901. He finds then refuge in English Guyana and manages to join New York, where he writes his memories (Me, Clément Duval, convict and anarchist) before dying there the March 29th 1935.
