Clear Chanel Communications

Clear Chanel Communications is a group of American media whose head office is located at San Antonio, Texas.

Short history

Origins

Clear Chanel Communications was created in 1972, by Lowry Mays.

In the beginning its activity is urban furniture like JC Decaux. However one day, a customer texan of ad spaces Clear Chanel was put in bankruptcy, and the group recovered two radios in payment of the debts. The chairman then saw possible synergies between radio publicity and urban publicity and started to repurchase many stations.

Since 2004

In 2004, Clear Chanel had 1.200 radio stations and 30 television broadcast stations on the American territory.

Its coupled advertizing capacity with the force of its media enable him today to impose its first parts to the organizers independent of concerts.

Clear Chanel tries today the same strategy in Europe and Asia, and for this reason starts to develop its principal activity of urban furniture in these zones: JC Decaux is from now on number 2 in Belgium, and loses market shares in the rest of the world (in June 2005, it simultaneously lost Shanghai and the renewal of the CUDL).

Into 2005 Clear Chanel Communications was divided into 3 separate companies. Clear Chanel Communications a diffuser of radio, Clear Chanel Outdoor for urban publicity and Live Nation, organizers of events and spectacles. The Mays family keeps the effective control of the 3 companies and holds stations in the executive teams (Mays Mark like CEO of the radio and DC Outdoor and Randall Mays like chair of Live Nation).
